Obatzda – Bavarian Oktoberfest / Beergarden dip

Obatzda is a Bavarian beer cheese dip which is traditionally served with beer and other alcoholic beverages in beergardens and at the Oktoberfest in Munich.

Ideal snack to have if you enjoy a drink but don’t want to get plastered 😂

It uses Camembert, spices and onions in one smooth dip, served with pretzels ‘Bretzeln’ and/or bread and is a delicious appetizer or snack.

Here I have served it in the form of Oktoberfest-Tapas for pre-dinner drinks!

Recipe Obatzda (try and pronounce that one 🙂

  • 1/4 onion
  • 100 g Camembert, ripe
  • 100 g Brie, ripe
  • 50 g butter
  • 20 g Crème fraiche
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tsp paprika spice
  • 1/4 tsp ground cumin
  • 20 g beer

Chop the onions as finely as possible. Add Camembert, Brie, butter, crème fraiche, salt, pepper, paprika, cumin and beer and blend everything together until it is a smooth mass. Can also be made in a Thermomix or a normal blender.

Serve with pretzels and/or dark bread.
